About Pertussis (whooping cough)

Pertussis is defined as a bacterial disease in the membranes of the respiratory system. Pertussis is more commonly known as whooping cough. The infection is highly contagious. Pertussis usually begins with a raspy cough, fever and sneezing. The duration of pertussis can be as long as 6 weeks. Individuals most affected by Pertussis are infants and young children. Pertussis is treatable in the early stages by antibiotics, but is not treatable with antibiotics in advanced stages. Therefore, early diagnosis of pertussis is critical. Recently an adult pertussis vaccine was developed to prevent older individuals from spreading the disease to infants and young children.
