Severe Cough

A severe cough is excessive coughing. Coughing is an important way to keep the throat and airways clear. A severe cough is "acute" which means it begins suddenly and lasts up to 3 weeks long. A severe acute cough is usually caused by a cold, flu, or sinus infection. Severe coughing may mean there is an underlying disease or disorder. If severe coughing lasts for more than 2 weeks you should see a doctor to find out the underlying cause.
