Armour thyroid, or thyroid tablets, is a medication used to treat the condition hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce any or enough thyroid hormone, which helps to regulate metabolism. Armour thyroid can help alleviate hypothyroid symptoms including fatigue, gaining weight, general pain, constipation, and changes in hair and skin. Armour thyroid tablets are taken orally, and the dose may increase over time as needed. Armour thyroid must be taken every day. Armour thyroid may cause some side effects, including anxiety and feeling hyper, headaches, abdominal cramping, insomnia, flushed skin, increase in appetite, and diarrhea.
