Aspirin is a salicylate medication that decreases chemicals in the body in order to manage inflammation, fever, and pain. Aspirin is available over-the-counter under several brand names, including Bayer and Bufferin. Aspirin is also available in a prescription strength. Daily aspirin may be recommended to help ward off heart attack or stroke. Aspirin may be used as needed to manage rheumatoid arthritis pain, osteoarthritis pain, and other forms of chronic pain, as well as acute pain from headaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and muscle aches and pains. Aspirin may also be used to manage pain caused by an injury or illness. Aspirin can also help lower a fever caused by an illness.
