Burning tongue is an uncomfortable, stinging sensation inside the mouth. Burning tongue may feel as though you burned or scalded your mouth from drinking something hot. Other symptoms that may accompany burning tongue include mouth pain, numbness, or a tingling sensation in the mouth. Burning tongue is a symptom of a condition called burning mouth syndrome, which causes a persistent burning sensation that may affect the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and the roof of the mouth. Burning mouth syndrome may also be called burning lips syndrome, burning tongue syndrome, scalded mouth syndrome, stomatodynia, or glossodynia. The cause of burning tongue syndrome is unknown.
