Nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders are abnormalities of a valve in the heart that are not caused by or related to rheumatism. Nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders affect the way that the blood flows from the heart. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common type of nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders in which blood flows backward into the lungs because the valve can’t close properly. Other types of nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders include mitral valve regurgitation and mitral stenosis. Nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders can occur as a result of degeneration of the mitral valve, infection, or damage to the heart caused by heart attacks.
