Home > Publications > Condition: Thyrotoxicosis With Or Without Goiter

Thyrotoxicosis with or without goiter is a severe, life-threatening condition that occurs as a result excessive thyroid hormone in the blood, and may occur with or without the enlargement of the thyroid gland. Thyrotoxicosis with or without goiter results when hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) goes untreated. Symptoms of thyrotoxicosis can include sweating, shaking, heart pounding, and confusion. Goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) can occur as a result of hyperthyroidism. Thyrotoxicosis is also sometimes called thyroid storm or thyroid crisis. Thyrotoxicosis with or without goiter can be caused by a sudden worsening in hyperthyroidism symptoms, often brought on by stress, some sort of trauma, or infection.
