Itchy skin is known by the medical term pruritis. Itchy skin/pruritis can occur anywhere on the body, and itching can occur in one spot or across the entire body. Itchy skin can be caused by many factors, from skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, or dry skin; parasites such as lice or pinworms; an allergic reaction; irritation from poison ivy or chemicals; a skin infection; or a sunburn. Pruritis is typically not a serious condition and doesn’t usually require medical attention. Pruritis is often soothed by over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams or oral antihistamines; cold compresses; and frequent moisturizing of the skin.
