Treatment: Theophylline

Theophylline helps to widen the air passages inside the lungs and relax the muscles to help you breathe more easily. Theophylline can help ease difficult breathing, wheezing, congestion, cough, and shortness of breath. Theophylline can also improve the movement of the diaphragm and help improve heart function. Theophylline is available in syrup, tablet, solution, and capsule form. Other bronchidilator medications may be prescribed in addition to theophylline for better symptom control.
