6MP (6-mercaptopurine) is an immunosuppressive drug. It is also called “Mercaptopurine” and the brand name “Purinethol”. 6MP is an immunomodulator. Immunomodulators are medications that suppress the body’s immune system either by reducing the cells that are responsible for immunity, or by interfering with proteins that promote inflammation. 6MP is used in the treatment of leukemia and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).
