Corticosteroid cream is a topical medication that includes steroid drugs, and is often used to treat inflammatory skin conditions. Some common steroids used in cortisone cream include prednisone, cortisone, and hydrocortisone. Corticosteroids are drugs that behave like hormones, and work against inflammation and the body’s immune response to allergens and irritants. A corticosteroid cream may be prescribed to treat inflamed, itchy skin caused by such conditions as psoriasis and eczema (also called dermatitis). Corticosteroid cream is available in different strengths, and stronger types of corticosteroid cream may cause side effects such as allergic reaction, redness of the skin, increased risk of skin infections, and skin sensitivity.
