Lialda, also known by the generic name mesalamine, is an anti-inflammatory agent drug that inhibits the production of chemicals by the body that cause inflammation and pain. Lialda is often prescribed to treat ulcerative colitis, but may be used to treat other conditions as well. Lialda also often helps prevent the recurrence of ulcerative colitis symptoms, including diarrhea and abdominal cramping and pain. Lialda is available as a capsule or tablet taken orally, an enema, and a suppository, and comes in controlled-release and delayed-release forms. Lialda may cause many different side effects, including pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles, vomiting and nausea, or symptoms similar to the flu.
