Rowasa is a brand-name medication that is typically prescribed to treat the digestive condition ulcerative colitis. Rowasa, also known by the generic name mesalamine, may be administered as a suppository (solid tablet that dissolves) or an enema (liquid) in the rectum, but is also available as a pill that can be taken orally. Rowasa is an anti-inflammatory agent, and it helps to inhibit the production of chemicals, called prostaglandins, that trigger inflammation and pain. The body produces excess prostaglandins as a result of inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis. When used as a treatment for ulcerative colitis, Rowasa helps to reduce inflammation in the colon manage symptoms such as abdominal cramping and diarrhea.
