Methotrexate is an antimetabolite drug, which inhibits the growth of some types of cells in the body to help treat many different health conditions. Methotrexate is the generic name of the drug, which may also be available under the brand names Trexall and Rheumatrex. Methotrexate may be prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, several different types of cancer, and other conditions. Methotrexate can cause serious, even life-threatening side effects. Methotrexate is not usually given as a first-line treatment, but used when other drugs don’t provide relief of symptoms or treatment of the disease. Since methotrexate can cause a number of harmful side effects, including damage to the liver and kidneys, regular blood tests are usually needed to check for damage.
